Repetitive Predictable Engaging Easy-to-Implement Accessible

As a music therapist, using books that have an inherent rhythm, melody, or repetitive phrase, AKA “singable books” has always been a go-to in my sessions with kids. There are endless ways to use them to work on a wide variety of goals…and I’ve gathered all of my ideas, lists, etc. in one easy-to-access online space: The Singable Book Club!

Singable books can incorporate all learning styles: visual, auditory, reading/writing and kinesthetic. They use a familiar, predictable structure that can provide a sense of comfort and knowing. The inherent repetitive nature of many of these books allows for multiple opportunities to practice speech sounds & sight words over and over…without it getting boring! Pairing rhythm and melody with reading can gain a child’s attention in an engaging way and help them retain the information they learn.

Using singable books is a low-prep, easy-to-implement,

FUN way to reach young learners!

Ps. Most of these books can be accessed for FREE at your local library (and many come in digitized formats, as well!)

About
the Creator

Rachel See

MA, MT-BC

Hi, I’m Rachel!

After graduating with an undergrad degree in communication disorders and a Master’s in music therapy, I became endlessly fascinated and interested in how language and music intersect, connect, and enhance each other.

As a board-certified music therapist since 2011, I have used a (constantly growing!) collection of tried-and-true singable books in my sessions for pre-k and elementary-aged students of all abilities…

…and here is what I’ve seen:

  • Rhythm, rhyme and melody brings a book to life.

  • The sense of predictability and structure in a singable book piques my students’ interest and keeps them engaged, as they look forward (with great anticipation!) to each time they can say/sing the repeatable phrase.

  • Many of my intonation-enhanced gestalt language learners who learn through “chunks” of language benefit from the repeated lines and exaggerated intonation used in singable books.

  • Singable books are a very motivating tool for practicing core words on the students’ AAC (Augmentative Alternative Communication) device in a natural, fun environment.

  • These books are also perfect for practicing sight words, speech sounds, cause & effect concepts, motor skills/movements, pre-academic skills, sequencing, and more!

And now I’ve gathered and curated a collection of melodies, handouts, and endless activities to go alongside each book.

It is my absolute pleasure to share these ideas with YOU to use in your sessions, classroom, and/or home. I can’t wait to hear how you use these singable books!

Check out the club, connect with us on Instagram, or send me an email!

I’d love to hear from you!
