Props for Singable Books: Part 2

Welcome to Part 2 of my “Props for Singable Books” series!

Counting Cookies Set + “Who Took the Cookies from the Cookie Jar?

One of my favorite props ever! Use the cookies (bonus: they’re easy to clean!) alongside the book to work on counting, numbers, requesting, yes/no, me/you (“Who me? Yes, you!”), and more!

Catch and Count fish + “Go Fish!”

I love to use “Go Fish” as a way to work on the core word “Go”. Add this fishing prop to also work on numbers, sorting, and turn-taking.

Rhythm Sticks + “Two Sticks”

Tap along with this book with a pair of rhythm sticks! Get creative with where you play them (on a chair, on the floor, on the desk) and what rhythmic pattern you use. Bonus points if you use a toy alligator to play your sticks on, like they do in the book!

Pocket Cube Dice + “Waking Up is Hard to Do”

Pocket cube dice are extremely versatile and could be used with EVERY singable book! Fill the pockets with core words from the book, story element prompts, review questions…or anything else you can think of!

Sequencing cards + “The Jacket I Wear in the Snow”

This book is ideal for learning the concept of sequencing (what winter clothing did they wear first? Second? Last?). Try the skills they’ve practiced with the book with the sequencing cards!

Animal Movement Cards + “Doing the Animal Bop”

Here are some additional animal movement cards you can use pre- or post-reading! Have fun dancing and moving like animals!

Quote

“Music makes pictures and often tells stories, all of it magic and all of it true.

And all of the pictures and all of the stories, and all of the magic, the music is you.”

-John Denver

Opened up a singable book (“Grandma’s Feather Bed”) and this was the first page 🧡.

Author interview with Jes Cleland

STINK BUGS. Do you have them where you live? Well, it turns out when author Jes Cleland moved to Nashville, she had her first encounter with these insects, which she said eventually led her to “naming them in an effort to ease my fear of them.” From there, a silly song was born about trying to get them out of her house, which led to a singable book…and the rest is history!

In this interview, Jes, a music educator and founder of Music U, tells Singable Book Club members all about the origin story of her singable book, “Get Out, Beetle”, as well as the brainstorming, development, publishing and illustrating process that she experienced to be able to have it available for you to use with your child, students, therapy sessions, library story hours, music classes, and more!

Find the physical copy on Amazon and in the interactive e-book and teaching guide on F-flat books.

Props for Singable Books: Part 1

📣Introducing Part 1 of my “Props for Singable Books” series! Want the links to the items mentioned? Check out the blog on singablebookclub.com!

“What a Wonderful World”: Use colorful scarves and the printout form the Singable Book Club to work on color identification.

“The Animal Boogie”: Practice all of the animal moves mentioned in the book on the big, Remo gathering drum!

“Oh Where, Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone?” is perfect to use with a small dog figurine set that I found.  Place the dogs in/on/under items to practice where/preposition questions!

“Mail Myself to You” pairs well with this play mailbox from Learning Resources. Put whatever you’re working on in the mailbox: core words, WH questions, conversation, movement, and more! This is such a versatile prop to use.

“Jingle Bells”: Use a variety of bells to accompany this familiar tune.

“The 12 Days of Valentine’s”: Use a sensory bin that the student can use while you read this book.

Mazel Tov, Baby!

Mazel Tov, Baby!” is a beautiful example of how an author and a songwriter can come together to create a book with an accompanying song…and I’m sooooo excited to share this interview with Singable Book Club members, where they’ll get to hear from BOTH Dara (the author) and Ashley (the songwriter).

Each perspective is fascinating and I’m honored they were able to share with me & the club about their entire process: from brainstorming, to recording, to the most challenging moments, as well as what they are most proud of when it comes to the book and song.

As Dara notes, “I’m so proud that both Mazel Tov, Baby! (the book) & Ashley’s adorable song encourages caregivers and children to celebrate their progress and connect with each other. It’s so important to celebrate each step we take, because even baby steps are important.”

After reading what they have to say, you’ll leave feeling inspired and energized to write your own singable book!

➡️ Join the club to read the entire interview (your club membership not only allows you access to the interview, but to over 150+ singable book resources)!
